About The Data Protection Review

The Data Protection Review is an editorial publication covering backup strategy, disaster recovery, ransomware resilience, and data protection technology for the people who actually design, run, and test these systems: systems administrators, DevOps and SRE engineers, storage and infrastructure specialists, MSPs managing backup for clients, and IT security and GRC staff responsible for recoverability.

We write for practitioners, not for procurement brochures. Coverage is grounded in operational reality — RPO and RTO, retention and restore testing, real failure modes, and the tradeoffs between approaches — rather than marketing language borrowed from any single vendor.

Backup Strategy — backup planning and policy: the 3-2-1(-1-0) rule, retention and GFS rotation, full/incremental/differential backup types, and verification and restore testing.

We name multiple tools and approaches in every category we cover and are willing to say where a product, standard, or common practice falls short. We do not accept vendor-paid editorial, and this site does not sell or endorse a specific backup product.

A Note on This Domain’s History

This domain previously hosted Backup Manager, an open-source command-line backup tool for GNU/Linux, from the mid-2000s through the late 2010s. The Data Protection Review is a separate, unaffiliated editorial publication operating at this domain today — we are not that project, its authors, or its maintainers, and we do not distribute or maintain any of its code.
